Getting into FLOW: where, what and why?

Do you know that feeling, when you are completely absorbed by a task or activity - where your ability is being gently challenged and your focus is entirely present? You might already describe that as a ‘flow’ state - when time and other distractions melt away and you are ‘in’ something fully.

I think these moments of flow are deeply connected to what lies at our SOURCE - what excites, energises and motivates us. Those experiences are the activities that describe how we become connected - to ourselves, to our innate abilities, to the present moment.

But getting into FLOW is famously difficult for busy working mothers - the distractions are many, the pull on our attention is constant, and the need to always keep one moment ahead of everyone else often gets in the way of that precious state.

By identifying what brings about a flow state in each of us (which may look radically different, person to person), we might be able to preserve and then protect some time to experience that flow state.

As Diane Allen shares below - we might also be able to transfer that flow ‘strategy’ (as she calls it) to other circumstances, and reframe other situations with its help. Imagine being able to use a flow state (private, focused, moment to moment) in other circumstances. What a gift.

Some questions to help you reflect:

Where are you most likely to experience a state of flow?

What will you be doing - with your hands, your body, your mind?

What will be happening as a result of that feeling of flow? Why is it precious and worth exploring?
