Dr Becky Kennedy - Repair as an act of Love
This video is about parenting, from the current 'parenting whisperer’ Dr Becky. Do you follow her on Instagram? For a Brit, her dramatic tones can feel a bit of a grate - but actually I have always enjoyed her message, her approach, and her honesty.
Also, whilst this is about parenting, it is actually a valuable lesson in relationships more generally. The core idea (if you are not aware of it from other authors, like Phillippa Perry, for example) is that normal relationships are prone to rupture - we get pissed off, have a bad day, loose our s**t or miscommunicate.
The loving response to when things go wrong in relationships, is to focus on repair. How we manage the moments of difficulty - and choose to take responsibility for our part in the equation - demonstrates to someone else an act of love. You are saying that the relationship is worth fixing.
I have one or two troublesome relationships in my life - we all do! Sometimes I need to remind myself that communicating love through acts of repair is more important than the original hurt or placing blame.
