Wheel of Everything: what needs your attention in 2024…?

You may have done this activity with me before - or it might be a new one for you. Either way, it’s a great one to use, repeatedly, to see the big picture and take stock.

This activity is a well-worn way to create perspective and offers you a birds eye view of how life looks, today.

Instructions

There are different ways to use this wheel (see the last section below), but we are going to think quite generally with this activity.

Below you will see a circle. Divided into sections, this wheel represents your life as a whole. Each section represents an important aspect of your life - something important to you, meaningful or valuable. It might just be a necessary part of life that enables things to tick along nicely.

  1. Recreate the wheel below. Label each section of your wheel with an area of your life that is important to you. It could be a role (mother); an action (gardening); a feature of your life (work); something more abstract (health & wellbeing).

  2. You can split a section in 2 if you need more sections. You don’t even have to have 8. You choose.

  3. Using the markings as a guide, with 10 on the outside of the circle and 0 in the middle, score this area of your life with regards to how SATISFIED you are with this area of your life. This is an entirely subjective measure - and based more on feeling than scientific analysis! So go with your gut…

  4. Take a look at your scores, and notice: what is working well today, and what needs your attention next?

  5. See below for some more reflective question prompts.

  6. See below that to find out more ways to use your wheel to support you. It is the best self-coach tool I know!

Some Questions

What is your wheel telling you? What areas of your life need attention?

Are there any surprises, patterns, stories?

In any given section - what does a 10 look like (and if you’ve done this activity before with me - has that changed in any way)?

From your score today, what small action could you take to move your score closer to 10?

What will you SELECT - a new habit, an action, a new idea, a new way of thinking?

What small CHOICE could make the biggest impact on your feelings of satisfaction and fulfilment? What is the smallest commitment with the greatest potential to initiate change?

Other uses of the wheel

You could take any one of the areas you have identified and use a separate wheel to break that down even further. For example, you could take ‘work’ and subdivide another wheel into ‘content’, ‘process’, ‘colleagues’, ‘commute’, ‘rewards and benefits’, ‘pay’, etc.

You could ask a different question. For example, for each area of the wheel, you could score it in terms of how much progress you’ve made since the last time you did the wheel. Or you could score based on how much attention you give that area of your life (and a second score, for how much attention you would LIKE to give that area of your life).

You could even plot the steps to 10: what actions, at each stage between your score today and your ultimate score of 10 in that area, could you take to get you to a ‘10’?

Make up your own use of the wheel and report back - share anything that you find helpful.
