Angharad is the alt-pop project of song-writer and fiddle player Angharad Jenkins from Swansea. Deemed as an artist and songwriter “with fire, passion and unflinching honesty at the core of all her music,” Angharad's music has been described by Deb Grant, BBC6 Music, as “provocative” and “a confident and positive ‘call to arms’ for women in the music industry" by Cassie Fox of Loud Women.
Her debut solo album 'Motherland' was released in March 2024 via Libertino and was described in CLASH Magazine as "an accomplished debut from an exciting new voice." It was nominated for Welsh Music Prize 2024.
Her music explores the female experience, motherhood, and our relationship with time. A powerful, and fearless artist, her new music has a strong story-telling aspect and has been drawing comparisons with the likes of John Cale, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell.
Described as a ‘musical chameleon,’ she has long worked at the edges of expectations.
She’s enjoyed a 15-year career touring the world with multi award-winning Welsh folk band Calan, but since becoming a mother she has discovered her voice. Literally a singing voice, and also words and stories that needed to be told.
Her music has been championed by Deb Grant on BBC6 Music, and two of her singles have remained on the BBC Radio Wales Welsh A-List for three consecutive weeks. She played her debut performance at Greenman Festival in 2023, followed by stand-out performances at Other Voices in Cardigan and FOUCS Wales.
She has a distinguished career in the folk/roots scene and continues to sing and play fiddle with her long-standing musical companion Patrick Rimes of Calan, and jazz pianist Huw Warren.
She’s a passionate believer in the power of art to change society, and works regularly with Live Music Now, delivering community music projects, such as the ground-breaking Lullaby Project.
As an artist, she’s driven by her three core values of creativity, connection and community. So whether playing traditional music on her fiddle, or song-writing, she uses her voice as a musician to connect with others and open discussion. Her motivation as an artist is essentially to improve wellbeing and bring joy to others.
