Are you a self-employed mother, just about keeping on top of the family finances?
Do you find it hard to find the money for the holidays, and worry about the long periods where it will be harder to work?
Do you have regular concerns about money and how you'll make ends meet?
Do you worry about the longer-term financial picture for your family - like how to manage your taxes, pensions and savings?
What is MAMA Money Matters?
This day-long workshop - designed especially for you - helps you get some perspective on your financial situation (without judgement or shame) and takes you through some brilliantly practical and simple ways to create greater financial literacy and confidence.
We hope that all the mothers who come to our workshop will leave with:
Greater curiosity into your story of, and relationship to, money - especially as a freelancer
Greater awareness about what you would like your financial picture to be - and the tools to help you get there
Greater confidence in saving, financial management, having those tricky conversations with others (at work and home!) - about how you are providing for your family in the short- and long-term
A more rounded picture as to your value - as a freelancer, a mother and a contributor to the economy and communities around you
Some solid information, inspiration, and recommendations for further financial advice and planning
Who are we?
The programme is hosted by Alice Ballantine Dykes (MAMA Coaching Founding Director) and Rhyannan Hall (qualified Accountant and small business champion) - both women who have developed their own small businesses and developed their own systems to make their financial lives make sense.
They know what it means to...
Question what you charge and be unsure of your value
Always be right at the ends of your means - with little wriggle room or room for error
Feel emotional about money, and not know how to discuss it with others
Rhyannan takes a very human approach to all things financial and recognises the deeply emotional and cultural influences on how we manage our money. Alice has been working with mothers for nearly 10 years, helping grow small businesses and enabling mothers to make informed and positive choices about their working lives.
What to expect…
Using a group coaching approach, and building a safe context in which to discuss often taboo and unspoken-about thoughts and feelings, Alice and Rhyannan will guide you through the following questions:
Why is it so hard to talk about money?
What is your relationship to money and how does it impact your financial life now?
What forces are working with us, and against us, in the capitalist economy we are living in?
What do you want, and need, to earn - and how will you earn it?
What would life be like if you had some healthy financial habits?
What are the habits you need to adopt - and what will help you cultivate and nurture them?
What kind of motivation or accountability will you need to see you through to your financial goals?
Timings
The workshop will be within a normal school day - starting at 10am and finishing at 2.30pm - the same at the weekends.
We will be arranging a sharing lunch where possible - so that we can keep the conversation live during our time together.
10-10.15 Introductions and Ways of Working This is to create a safe space in which to discuss issues perceived as private, taboo and sometimes shameful.
10.15-11 Why is it so hard to talk about money? In our family lives, money can be a constant theme of conversation, and yet we call come with our own stories, beliefs and experiences of money. We also live in a patriarchal, capitalist economy, which has shaped the way many of us work and build our businesses.
11-11.45 The Dreamer It is ok to want to earn enough money to live the life you want. Sometimes we need reminding that the stories we tell ourselves about money tend to play out in how we earn, save, and spend it. This session gives you permission to dream, and based on your values and what a balanced life looks like for you, we put some ideals out into the world.
11.45-12.30 The Realist Examining our existing financial habits, we interrogate which are working well for us, and what might need to change. We explore what some helpful and healthy financial habits might look like in practice and consider how they might help us achieve our goals.
12.45-1.15 Over lunch... How do you create new habits? You tend to need to feel highly motivated to set and cultivate and sustain new habits. What is motivating you to build healthy financial habits? Is it to avoid the stress that money can create? Is it to work towards something of value to you? Our new financial habits could be life changing. Let's make them so.
1.15-1.45 BS and Taxes You have choice and agency as a freelancer. This session considers the bigger picture that will inform the details - like how and when to do your tax return and basic book keeping.
1.45-2 Visualisation: Imagining a future where you have put in place the new habits we have explored today.
2-2.30 Reflections, insights and close We draw our session to a close with a chance to share some of the more impactful insights during the day, and to consider how you will take what you have learned forward.
